Towbar electrics
Most Caravans have 2 plugs but some only have 1.. How can you tell which one is which?
This short guide is just to help you on the right path to selecting the correct electrics for your vehicle upon purchase of a towbar. We cannot guess which electrics you need for your Caravan so this guide is just to help you establish which kind of plug to look for on your Caravan. If you get stuck or need assistance please contact a member of the team on the number below.
SINGLE ELECTRICS
The legal minimum requirement for Caravans is single electrics. This gives you the following connections as an output from your vehicle:
L Indicator
R Indicator
L Sidelight
R Sidelight
Brakelights
Fog Lights
Ground
This is only single socket and will not charge the onboard battery, operate the fridge or activate reverse lights on your caravan. Please see Twin Electrics or 13pin.
When you choose Advanced towing to install your single electrics with your towbar our minimum basic fit includes an audible buzzer which warns you when indicating whilst towing.
TWIN ELECTRICS
Most caravans come with Twin electrics which gives you the connections for the following:
12N PLUG -
L Indicator
R Indicator
L Sidelight
R Sidelight
Brakelights
Fog Lights
Ground
12S PLUG -
Reversing Light
Onboard Charging
Refrigerator
Interior Lights
Ground
When you choose
13 PIN ELECTRICS
Modern and European caravans are normally fitted with 13 pin Electrics which gives you the connections for the following all in one Plug:
L Indicator
R Indicator
L Sidelight
R Sidelight
Brakelights
Fog Lights
Ground
Reversing Light
Onboard Charging
Refrigerator
Interior Lights
Ground
This system is recommended if you need Twin electrics with a Detachable Towbar because in most cases the electrics can be hidden behind the bumper and most detachable towbars only allow for a single socket to be fitted. If this is the case and your Caravan is twin electrics we will supply you with a conversion lead to split the one socket back into two.
When you choose Advanced towing to install your 13 pin electrics with your towbar we fit a minimum of an audible buzzer for alerts and a split charge relay which only charges the Caravan when your engine is running.
